If you’re new to email marketing, it can feel very overwhelming. I promise, it’s totally fine to start with just one opt in and one workflow like I show in my free mini course for getting started, but if you’re feeling ready to take the next step, I wanted to share a peek inside my email marketing set up I’ve created with Flodesk!
Let’s chat opt ins, welcome sequences, workflows, and funnels – everything you need to automate your marketing using email.

Just a reminder that I am a proud affiliate with Flodesk. Using my link or my code ASHLEYMIK will get you 25% off your first year with them!
Getting Started with Email Marketing
I’ve shared before how I felt super overwhelmed by email marketing. In fact, I spent ages removing people from my list to try to stay under the number of allotted subscribers. When I finally started in earnest, I realized it was much less nerve-wracking than I’d made it out to be, especially with something as intuitive as Flodesk!
Learn more about getting started with my free mini course here. It’s just about 30 minutes long!

Opt Ins with Flodesk
A while ago, based on Shelly Rees’s coaching, I removed my freebies that didn’t have a purpose from TPT. I didn’t want to waste them, but they were just cluttering up my shelves, so to speak. They became opt ins for my email list instead! Each of them is connected to a form that is connected to a labeled segment.
Here’s an example of what that looks like:

I always like to think of segments like differentiated learning groups in a classroom. Clear labels help me know who needs what, and get them what they need! Then you can design your learning materials (emails) specifically for each group (segment) of your class (email list).
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by segments, but remember, you’re just collecting information. You don’t have to differentiate every single piece of your email content!
The First Workflow
Once someone has opted in using a form as I described above, they are connected to the first workflow. This workflow does a very simple job – delivers the freebie! I share exactly how to set this up step by step in my free mini course if you’d like the visual walkthrough.
The first workflow in my email marketing set up does just two jobs: it connects the opt in to send the freebie they requested. It then adds them to my welcome sequence.
Quick note: they are still tagged in the segment they entered in. This is just in case I ever want to market to that audience, or need that data for some reason!
Remember, you don’t have to differentiate, but it’s handy to have the info if you need it.
Email Marketing Welcome Sequence
If you’ve gotten your email list set up, you can take a moment to celebrate, but then you’ll want to dive into creating your welcome sequence! All of my opt ins that aren’t connected to bundle funnels get sent to my general welcome sequence.
I share a lot more about what’s in a welcome sequence in this blog post, so if you want the full walk through make sure to check that out here!
The basics are that an email welcome sequence is designed to be the getting to know you and your business between a new email subscriber and what you have to offer. My email welcome sequences have ranged between 3-5 emails in the workflow.
The reason why I send all of my email opt ins to the same welcome sequence is because with Flodesk you can prevent them from going through a workflow more than once.
This means that even if someone signs up for 20 different freebies, they won’t get sent through my welcome sequence over and over again! That would be a terrible first (second, third, fourth…) impression. Yikes!
Email Marketing Automation Funnels
We can’t talk about email marketing without talking about funnels to automate sales. And while the opt in, workflow, and welcome sequence I mentioned previously are all automated, they’re not created to purposefully sell, you know?
There’s a difference in content made to grow relationships and educate and the content made to make sales. You definitely don’t want to leave that piece out of your email marketing set up!
The last piece of my email marketing set up is specific to opt ins that are designed to provide a free sample of a product line. These are things I have created larger bundles for in my TPT store, that have a purposeful freebie, and that I want to make sure people understand how to use when they’re considering purchasing the bundle!
The way these bundle funnels works is pretty simple:
- They opt in for the related freebie
- They get tagged in the segment and added to the workflow
- The workflow delivers that freebie
- It then delivers a series of emails specific to the activity – how to’s, tips, tutorials, FAQs, and (of course!) upsells the bundle
People can sign up for as many different freebies as they want, or as they find their way to, depending on their path through my blog and socials.
I can also use these tags to send offers specifically to the segments of my list who signed up for those freebies related to the bundles.
