Welcome Sequence

What is a welcome sequence? A welcome sequence or nurture sequence is an automated series of emails sent to every new lead signing up to your mailing list. They generally receive this series of emails after signing up for your opt in. See more email terms here.

How to Write a Welcome Sequence

First off, if you’d like to skip the heavy lifting, I highly recommend this free resource from my friend Liz. It includes:

  • Welcome Sequence
  • 3 Newsletters
  • 52 Subject Lines

That’s basically everything you need to get rolling with your list for the next year!

Bound and determined to do it on your own? Here’s a few thoughts for you:

  1. Show your stuff – I like to think of it as like a welcome tour to (most of) what I have to offer. I take them around, get to know them, and hit the highlights. What do you really want to show off? What are your strengths? How can you support them in those first few emails? Brainstorm your “greatest hits” and give them the tour.
  2. Build relationships – they should feel like they know YOU at the end of your welcome sequence, not some faceless computer screen. Bring your personality to your emails with your word choice, humor, and images.
  3. No novels needed – there’s no need to give them a TON of info, but you need to let them know you have free and paid resources to help them, and your vision for how you’re going to support them.

What do you put in a Welcome Sequence?

What you actually put into the sequence will depend on you and your business but here’s the gist:

  1. Give them the freebie they signed up for and say a brief hello
  2. The highlights – give them the greatest hits
  3. Expectations – how often are you going to email them, and how will you help them?
  4. Your vision/dream/business goal for how you’re going to serve them

After that, pop them into your regular newsletter segment and email them consistently. Don’t forget to sell them your resources in that consistent note – they’re there for you to help them, and your resources are one of the ways you do so!

How long is your welcome sequence?

I would recommend 3-4 emails in your sequence before moving them into your regular email newsletter. This will be over the span of a week to a week and a half, depending on how many days you space your emails apart.
